Spray Tan Dictionary

Q & A's / How It Works

A: In custom tanning, tanning solution is applied by a technician using a compressor and a spray gun, which delivers a fine mist to the entire body (much like an air-brush). Upon application, you will notice a slight bronze color - this is called the "bronzer". Bronzer is added to the spray tan solution so that the spray tan technician can see where the solution is being applied, for seamless results. It also helps to activate the solution.

The tanning solution contains DHA, an active ingredient that reacts with the outer layer of skin, producing a bronzing effect. The maximum generation of color is reached within 8 to 12 hours, so the color will continue to darken after the initial application.

Your On The Glow Spray Tan technician may customize your tan by shading/contouring specific areas of your body to highlight muscle tone and lowlight problem areas, such as cellulite.

After the bronzer is washed off, a beautiful natural tan should result in skin coloration that is 1 to 2 shades darker. Multiple applications will produce deeper color.

Yes. Our spray tanning solutions are All Natural and FDA approved. The natural ingredent that changes the skin color is Dihydroxyacetone (DHA), a sugar cane derivative - also a food-grade product. The bronzer contains beets and other all natural ingredients. The solution contains no known allergens or toxins. When applied to the skin, the spray tan solution penetrates only the top layer - it does not absorb into the bloodstream or body.

No. Although your skin is tan and it may take longer to see redness or burning form the sun, a spray tan does not act as a sun protectant. Make sure to wear sunblock! Sunblock with a spray-nozzle seems to work best when taking longevity of your tan into consideration.

A: Airbrush tanning produces quick tanning results, provides a healthier alternative to UV Tanning, and may also complement an existing tan.

In comparison to UV tanning, there is no threat of wrinkle development, skin damage, freckling, and most importantly, no added cancer threats.

Because every tan is custom, use sunless spray tanning to highlight your assets and bring your problem areas into deeper shades of bronze, for full control over your desired look.

We at On The Glow Spray Tan have perfected a system that is portable and easy to manage. We will come to your home or office, set up, spray you, and leave. All of this takes about a 1/2 hour. There's no mess, no fuss, no driving to and from the salon, just a beautiful tan that will leave you beautiful and refreshed.

Single Hit
A single hit is one layer of spray tan solution applied to the entire body. This method is used in our Standard Spray Tan sessions.

Double Hit
A double hit is two layers of spraytan solution applied to the entire body, during a single spray tan session. This method allows for a darker tan, but not quite as dark as the double-dip.

Double Dip
A double dip is two layers of spraytan solution applied to the entire body, commonly 24 hours apart, allowing the first session to mature overnight, with a second hit applied the next day - to achieve a rich dark tan.

Bronzers have subtle amounts of DHA (the color-changing natural chemical), commonly mixed with moisturizing skin care ingredients. Bronzers can be used alone to give a subtle sun-kissed look or used to prolong or extend an existing spray tan. You may also opt to use bronzers a day or two before a spray tan session.

Tan Extender

Tan extender is a moisturizer that can be used as a base, particulalry for men with hair on their chests and legs - applied a few days before a tan to achieve a more flawless tan. If you are using a tan extender after your tan, make sure the ingredients are water, not oil based. Moisturized skin does help hold the tan longer. Drinking lots of water and moisturizing well the days before the spray tan can also help extend the life of a tan.

Custom Contouring
Custom Contouring is an extra layer of solution that is applied to natural curves and trouble areas. It is artfully applied on celulite to darken the area in shadow, as well along the natural curves of your body, such as stomach musculature or breast cleavage areas. Creating these darker areas allows other areas to become highlighted, drawing the eye away from the trouble spots. The entire body, from collar bone to calves will be treated in such a manner to highlight your best features.
